Mexico: Expanding the Walk and Roll to School Day (WRSD) Movement

  • Status

    Ongoing

  • Location Yucatán (Mérida, Valladolid, Tizimín) or Quintana Roo (Benito Juárez, Felipe Carrilo Puerto, Solidaridad)

In Mexico, traffic accidents are the 2nd cause of youths' death on their way to/from school, especially in low-income neighborhoods where there is less safety infrastructure and students are more likely to walk/bike.

The project aims to deploy the WRSD movement in one disadvantaged school to improve road safety and promote accessible/inclusive mobility through:

1/ A WRSD celebration (Walking & cycling to school together for advocacy) incl. a workshop with teachers, parents, children & neighbors

2/ Technical support for local authorities to identify road safety needs & interventions (Area selection, proposal, workshop with stakeholders & implementation)

3/ Guideline creation to design safe schools' zone in Southeast Mexico and promote active mobility (Site visits in >4 schools' zone to identify issues & solutions, workshops with stakeholders & public presentation).
