India: Participatory afforestation for climate resilience in Bangalore urban areas

  • Status

    Ongoing

  • Location India

A large scale of agricultural & forest land around Bangalore is used for industries, housing & infrastructure (Railways etc) contributing to environment & health issues (Polluted air, higher carbon footprint, etc).

In 2003, the NGO initiateda program based on awareness & conservation, encouraging tree planting to increase the depleting green cover around Bangalore. The project aims to reduce carbon footprint through

  • Raising awareness about environment issues
  • Training local communities on sustainable afforestation & tree planting, using Miyawaki technique (Planting several trees per m² of native species & becoming maintenance-free after 3 years)
  • Setting up sappling nursery & gardener for plants regeneration & protection
  • Repairing damage from urbanisation & reverse trends to maintain healthy natural environment.
