India: Family strengthening programme for families in poverty

  • Status

    Ongoing

"Below poverty line families" continue to give birth to more children due to improper family planning, leading to child abandonment because these families have gone even deeper into poverty. The Family Strengthening Program started in 2002 to help reach a maximum number of children for these families and ensure that child abandonment will not happen.

The programme will do this in two ways:

  • Women empowerment through capacity building, skill development and livelihood creation for mothers through an income generation programme with self-help groups and micro-business enterprises
  • Education, nutritional supplements and health support for children
