India: After-school education and guidance centres for rural poor children

  • Status

    Ongoing

  • Location Karur District

The Karur District literacy rate is 69.30%. Parents are mostly uneducated & daily wage-earning so they cannot support their children’s education. Covid also strongly impacted education due to lockdowns. The project aims to establish 20 after-school education & guidance centres in 20 villages of Kulithalai & K.R. Puram Taluks, with 20 part-time teachers appointed to conduct classes (6th-12th grades). Teachers to be given 3 days initial training on methodology for conducting the classes, and children to be provided with school bags, notebooks & pens. The goal is to cultivate the habit of reading & writing in the evening regularly, improve the education level of rural poor children, reduce the social & economic burden of parents, prevent child marriages & help girls to go for higher education through proper guidance & counselling.
