Malaysia: “Rainforest to Reef” Programme

Project Description

  • Objective: educate children on the conservation of coral reefs and other connected ecosystems

Coral reefs are the world’s most biologically diverse marine ecosystems. They provide valuable services to hundreds of millions of people living in coastal areas, including food, coastal protection and income from tourism. However, coral reefs worldwide face various threats, mostly caused by human activities. Educating the young is an important step in preventing further damage to coral reefs worldwide.

To further this goal, the Alstom Foundation is supporting the “Rainforest to Reef” programme which will raise the awareness of the children of the Marine Park islands about the importance of coral reefs and how activities on land can affect them. The programme includes:

    • Having Malaysian-based staff as facilitators to support the implementation of the programme in five schools
    • Beach cleaning efforts
    • Educational workshops on ecosystem interrelations and reducing human impact

    Key facts:

    Location: Marine Park Islands, Malaysia

    Beneficiaries: local school children

    Duration: 1 year
